Holiday Opportunites
Sunday, 06 November 2011 09:46

The "H" word; holidays! Some of dread this time of year, others enbrace it. Whether you like it or not, one thing is for sure, weekends from November through early January are generally reserved for holiday socials. Attendance for some is "mandatory" or obligatory for others it is a time to laugh and relax. Whatever category you fall in, remind yourself it is a great opportunity for business networking.

Of course, when networking in a social situation, one needs to be very aware of the appropriate approach to take. Here are a few... Remember to place the person you are speaking with as the priority, not yourself. Be an immersion listenerâ„¢ by using effort energy, focus and empathy to receive the other's message. Ask questions to show your interest. Your communication partner will enjoy your interest and will naturally reciprocate that interest to you. Enjoy the gatherings. You never know what business relationships may begin.

Skillful Communication Sets You Apart
Tuesday, 05 July 2011 20:29

How many times have you attended networking events or PowerPoint presentations where you wanted to leave so you could escape the bordem? We all hope others would't think that of our communication skills. Since communication is the foundation of our professional and personal success, it is essential we see the value in growing our skills. The focus of skillful communiation needs to begin with our natural style. This is the center of being authentc.

If you have wondered how to grow professionally try putting time, effort and energy into becoming a better communicator.   If you are consistent and persistent your improved skills will pay off.

Social Media, Essential But Supplemental
Friday, 22 April 2011 20:49

Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter, etc. are an essential parts of our business marketing. Unfortunately, as with many other business owners, I do not consistantly post which decreases the value of these marketing opportunities. One of the most desired results of social media is to build relationships. However, the types of relationships that result can only be based on the content that is shared. The large downside of social media is it lacks the intangibles of communication, empathy, energy, tone, emotion, etc. These intangibles are the foundations of true trusted relationships. The only way to integrate all of the essential elements enabling deep and lasting relationships is to have face to face interactions.

I believe, when we focus the great majority of our communications on "technology communications", we are  doing ourselves a big disservice. Establishing effective relationships comes down to the "old fashion" approach, taking time to meet with people.

Details, Details...
Sunday, 06 March 2011 19:52

It's all in the details. Whoever originally said that is right especially when it comes to communication. Would you like to be a polished communicator? Paying attention to details will help you reach your goal. Consider saying word endings in a crisp manner, remember to use warm and positive facial expressions, positive voice tone, etc. These may seem to be unimportant or overly "picky" to place your attention on, but this type of effort makes a big difference in your communiation. Others will notice as well.

Have you considered these details for your communication? You should try to focus on one detail a week. Once you are aware of the impact, it's much easier than it sounds.

Give it a try.

The Elevator
Sunday, 30 January 2011 00:08

Have you included a communication goal in your 2011 business plan? If not, an important goal to focus on would be to improve your "elevator speech". Even if you feel comfortable with your current 30 second delivery, there is always a need to change it up and have a minimum of three different elevator speeches at the ready for various situations. Many cringe at the thought of having to deliver a descrption of there business at a networking event. This, by far, is the most important 30 second business marketing opportunity there is. The success or failure of these speeches can make or break your business. When given the opportunity to deliver your elevator speech, make it clear, concise and relevent. After you have worked on your 30 second speech, you will be surprised how fun it can be to spotlight your business.
